While one of our favorite GF bakeries has left the Upper East Side (R.I.P. Pip's Place), there are two new great gluten-free places in NYC to try!
NOGLU New York is a new restaurant and bakery located at 1266 Madison Avenue. The menu is entirely gluten-free. Yippee! (They also have a restaurant by the same name in Paris, if you happen to be vacationing abroad in the City of Lights.) Find information on the restaurant here at http://www.noglu.fr/contact-2/noglu-ny-is-opening-soon/ BY THE WAY bakery is a gluten-free, dairy-free store with locations on both the Upper East and Upper West Sides. Delicious! To find out more, visit the store or find them at http://www.btwbakery.com/#welcome If you come across a fabulous gluten-free friendly eatery, please let us know so we can spread the word. Bon Appetit! Just when I thought the weather was turning to spring, today is 40 degrees and snow is expected on Friday. My crocuses having already started coming up. What a tease! So, here is a delicious soup to warm you up on days like this. It's one of my favorites and a classic from the ultimate vegetarian restaurant, Moosewood, located in the heart of Ithaca, New York (Go Big Red!) It's easy to make, healthy, and has a spicy kick. Serve it with some toasted gluten-free ciabatta bread on the side and your lunch is ready. Freeze any leftovers for another chilly day until bathing suit season arrives. Enjoy!
GYPSY SOUP Ingredients:
Directions: Heat oil in a large pot and sauté onion, garlic, celery, and potato for about 5 minutes. Add broth, bay leaf, and spices. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer with the cover on for 15 minutes. Add tomatoes, peppers, and chick peas. Simmer for another 10 minutes. Stir in the soy sauce or tamari. Serves 4-6 hungry people. Move over other GF bagels…there's a new bagel in town and it's fantastic! Canyon Bakehouse is the latest gluten-free company to introduce a line of breads, but it's their bagels that are amazing. They are a soft, substantial bagel that can rival any non-GF bagel. There are two kinds, plain and everything. We've always loved Udi's bagels and now there is another to love. The only problem? We can't find the bagels in the store and had to buy them online with a hefty shipping cost. So, go to your local grocer and ask them to order them. One person won't make it happen, but twenty people will get the bagels on the shelves! My older son's favorite is toasted with butter, my younger one's is with peanut butter, and mine is a toasted everything with cream cheese and a slice of tomato. Sweet hallelujah! The bagel is back!
School vacation? Business trip? To make sure you stay gluten-free while away from home, follow these tips:
First: Call your hotel and ask for a mini-refrigerator in your room. You may need to refrigerate some GF food options during your stay, including bagels, sandwich bread, yogurt etc. Second: Do a search of nearby restaurants before you go and call ahead to see what GF items are on the menu. Speak to the chef or kitchen staff if possible. This will cut out time when looking for places to eat meals. Third: Pack some GF food if possible. Scharf products are great for travel because they are individually vacuumed packed - try their ciabatta dinner rolls, hot dog/hamburger rolls, hero rolls, and breadsticks. Always carry snack bars, such as Nature Valley Granola Bars (not the chewy version which contains barely malt,) Kind Bars, or EnviroKids Rice Crispy Bars. Fourth: Enjoy and relax! Welcome! Celebrate eating gluten-free with this fast, easy, delicious treat! My mom got it from her friend and we've modified it for GF eaters. It's addictive!
CHOCOLATE PRETZEL TREAT Ingredients: 1 package of gluten-free mini twist or square pretzels 1 package Hershey's Hugs chocolates 1 package M&M candies Directions: Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Lay pretzels on the cookie sheet. Put as many as you can fit on the sheet. Then put one Hershey Hug on top of each pretzel. Bake in the oven 4 to 4 1/2 minutes until the Hug just begins to melt. Take out of the oven and put one M&M on top of each pretzel/Hug piece. Let cool and put in the refrigerator. Enjoy! |
